Een corona rond de maan of zon onstaat als kleine waterduppeltjes of ijskristallen bijna dezelfde grootte hebben. Hoe gelijker de druppels, hoe meer ringen. Als de druppels heel kein zijn en vrijwel exact dezelfde grootte hebben, kunnen er zelfs kleurrijke iriserende wolken ontstaan minder dicht bij de zon. Het wordt vaker gezien bij maanlicht omdat het rondom de zon zonder bescherming te fel is. Corona is latijns voor kroon, en een niet geheel onbekend virus wordt helaas ook zo genoemd omdat de vorm de ontdekkers aan een kroon deed denken.

A corona around the moon or sun forms when very small droplets all have an almost identical size. The more even the size, the more rings. If droplets or crystals are very small and even, colorful iridescent clouds can appear, but this is very rare. It is mostly seen by moonlight because the sun is too bright to look at without protection. Corona is latin for crown, and a not entirely unknown virus has been given the same name unfortunately, because it's shape reminded the discoverers of a crown.
